Artist StatementI have an interest in creating physical places that give people a heightened awareness of their surroundings. I am interested in the contextual components that give meaning to a place and I like creating situations where people have a feeling of being in the moment, and a sense of being some where special. I work to create places that encourage people to ask questions, to create their own stories, and draw their own conclusions. I believe that feeling connected leads to a sense of ownership and to responsible behavior.
My working process follows an interactive model of gathering and exchanging information and ideas. I particularly enjoy working with community groups and engaging people in dialogue about their visions for improving the places where they live and work. I am interested in finding new ways of stimulating people’s thinking about the impact they have on their surrounds. I believe this awareness leads to better decisions about these places and better stewardship. I like working with the dynamic elements of a site – the sun, the wind, the water; the systems connected to the larger whole. At the same time, I pay attention to the site’s cultural history. My work comes from an ongoing personal experimental process, which includes research and collaboration. A number of recent installations have been done with Sue Richards. Because each of our sites requires a unique language to bring them to life, our work does not have a signature visual style. Our conceptual approach to each project is consistent throughout – the solutions have great variation in form, content and physical appearance. |
